She was born in August 2012 at San Marcos Hospital in Ocotepeque. When Denia was born, the doctors who attended to her mother did not notice anything unusual, so they did not inform the parents of any problem. She was discharged the day after delivery. Her father says that it was not until they were at home that they noticed the problem. They returned to the hospital with the baby so she could be examined. After seeing the condition, they referred them to Dr. Mario Catarino Rivas Regional Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery (a colostomy) so that she could pass stool. The doctor explained how to clean it, how to feed her, and that when she was a little older, she would need another surgery, as the colostomy was only temporary.

He stated that they have not missed any appointments, that her colostomy has never become infected, and that the patient has undergone all the tests requested by the doctors.

After several monthly appointments, “we were informed about the surgery, and a month ago they told us that she would have the surgery here (at Ruth Paz Hospital). The amount they initially told us was very affordable, but in the end, we were not charged anything. If they had charged us what they charge at Catarino, we would not have been able to have our daughter operated on,” her mother explained.

The father told us, “I feel very happy because even though another surgery is still needed, we have already made some progress. Maybe now we will have to come to San Pedro a little less, because we have spent money on transportation from where we live, all so that our daughter can be well. After this surgery, she will be better.”
